College of Engineering Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Instructional Support Group Equipement Loan Policy Feb 25 2016 ISG provides computers in labs for classes. We do not rent or lend computers to individual students. Our computers are the property of UC Regents, and when we dispose of old computers we send them to the UC "Excess & Salvage" operation (so UC can resell them). Individuals can purchase items like this from the CAL Overstock & Surplus Den (http://property.berkeley.edu/uc-berkeley-surplus). However, we can donate our old computers to student organizations, since the computers are then still in use by UC. So if you were a member of a UCB student organization, we can donate old computers to them and you could use the computers in their lab. Between 1999 and 2004, we supported 80 IBM and HP laptops for CS160 and CS169 students under Prof Landay's "Nomadic" laptop program. This program ended when the laptops became obsolete and we were denied permission to change a lab fee that would cover the cost of replacements. In 2004, we began support of 20 HP N6000 laptops for CS4 under Prof Garcia's "Mobile Lab" program. EECS ISG no longer manages them. Most of them died from hardware failures over the years, and in 2015 the remaining laptops were stored in a cart in 187 Soda for Prof Garcia.
