University of California at Berkeley Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Instructional Support Group /share/b/pub/lab-reservations.help Feb 2019 CONTENTS Instructional Lab Schedules for Classes Reserving an Instructional Lab for a Special Event Reporting Problems in the Labs Instructional Lab Schedules for Classes --------------------------------------- The EECS labs that are scheduled for regular lab sessions during the academic year include: 271, 273, 275 277, 330 Soda Hall 105, 111/117, 119, 125, 140, 204, 218 Cory Hall 200 Sutarja Dai Hall Course scheduling is arranged directly with the instructors by the EECS department schdeuling staff at ee-scheduling@eecs.berkeley.edu (205 Cory) or cs-scheduling@eecs.berkeley.edu (379 Soda). Course schedules are published by the Registrar at http://schedule.berkeley.edu/. Reserving an Instructional Lab for a Special Event -------------------------------------------------- To request an event in the labs, email inst@eecs.berkeley.edu with: * what day and time * who the organizers are * what group of people will be participating * how many participants * what software they require The lab staff post signs at the doors saying when the labs are reserved. To reserve an instructional lab for a special event, you must get approval from the department scheduling staff and the lab support staff. General rules for events in EECS instructional labs: 1) The organizers must be EECS or COE affiliated. 2) It can't be on a weekday during the semester (because our classes have priority, and they can schedule new labs at any time during the semester). 3) The ISG lab staff must approve the work we do to set the class up with accounts, software and cardkey access. The computing labs have Linux computers in the EECS instructional domain, so Calnet accounts don't work there. 4) On weekends and in between semesters, we let student groups reserve the labs for outreach activities. We don't charge for the facility, but we might charge for our time if the organizers are already charging their participants. EECS rooms in Soda and Cory are only available to EECS and CoE affiliated groups (https://eecs.berkeley.edu/resources/facilities/room-reservations). Groups usually ask weeks or even months ahead, to leave themselves enough time to find an alternative if we have to say no. We need to know the name of the EECS group or faculty sponsor, when the event would occur and what you would use the computers for. Then, we consider these factors: the availability of seats (we need to keep some labs open for our regular users), the amount of work you are requesting (would we have to create new accounts or install new software?), and our current workload. Note that the computing labs have Linux computers in the EECS instructional domain, so CAMPUS domain Calnet accounts don't work there. Reporting Problems in the Labs ------------------------------ To report a problem, students should contact the tech support staff for the lab, or if unknown, contact the Instructional computing staff at inst@eecs.berkeley.edu (333 Soda, 378 Cory). If there is an immediate safety or security issue, students should report it to a department building manager (either 387 Soda or 253 Cory) or request emergency help See "What if you are threatened in a lab?" (http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/pub.cgi?file=lab-safety.help), which is a link on our WEB site at http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu.
