Calvisitor does not require a username or password to login, but it only allows WEB browser connections, not 'ssh' connections to other computers. AirBears2 requires that you login with an AirBears2 key that you get from https://idc.berkeley.edu/mmk/. It allows the full range of network connectivity, including WEB browsing, ssh and the campus VPN for connections to the Library and other campus sites. For more information about network connections for your laptop: UCB AirBears2 (wireless) http://airbears.berkeley.edu UCB VPN (off-campus auth) http://www.net.berkeley.edu EECS (wired, wireless) http://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu AirBears2 is available in Cory Hall, Soda Hall, and Sutardja Dai Hall as well as in the coffee and food shops on Euclid Ave. This is because the EECS network group (IDSG) has installed multi-band access points that carry both the EECS and AirBears2 wireless network channels in these areas. For wired network ports in EECS auditoriums, please see http://idsg.eecs.berkeley.edu/networks/av.html. Rules for Using the Campus Network ---------------------------------- Users of UC Berkeley wired and wireless networks are subject to all of the rules of conduct that apply to the use of University and EECS computers and electronic communications. Users are NOT permitted to unplug computers in our labs so that they can use an active network cable. EECS does NOT permit unregistered computers on the EECS networks. Please see http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/policies.html for details. Laptops Lent to Data Science students ------------------------------------- The Data Science classes are expected to bring a laptop to their labs. Those students can borrow a free Chromebook for the current semester from the Moffitt Library Circulation Desk. To check availability, search for "Computer Science C8" at http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/search/r. The students can use the Chromebook on a wireless network to login to https://datahub.berkeley.edu. Laptops Lent to CS169 students ------------------------------ From August 2000 through May 2004, EECS Instruction maintained 79 "Nomadic" laptops (IBM ThinkPad 570E and HP Omnibook) that were issued to students in CS160 or CS169. The College of Engineering provided partial salary support for the "Nomadic" project for 3 years. The laptops were obtained by Prof Landay, who collected a $50 fee from each student to cover the cost of insurance. The laptop warranties expired in 2003, and we decided not to continue the insurance. For the final year, students were only required to pay a refundable deposit of $200. In Spring 2003, EECS Instruction sought approval to charge students a laptop usage fee with the goal of creating a self-sustaining loaner program. We needed to charge $40/month, but that was not approved. So the "Nomadic" laptop program expired in May 2004. An associated MS Windows server called ratbert.cs was maintained jointly by EECS Instructional Support and Prof Landay's research group. That server has been retired from service. Laptops Lent to Instructors --------------------------- Visiting instructors may be able to borrow a laptop from the EECS recharge support group (CUSG, cusg@eecs, 642-7777). EECS Instruction does not have a laptop lending service. EECS Instructional Support 384/386 Cory Hall, 333 Soda Hall inst@eecs.berkeley.edu
