Logons to Windows Remote Desktop Servers ---------------------------------------- You can logon to your Instructional Windows account from other computers using the Terminal Services/Remote Desktop Connection utility. You need the Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Connection client program on your computer to do this. It is included in newer versions of Windows. On the EECS Instuctional systems, you can find the RDC client at: Windows: C:\WINNT\system32\mstsc.exe UNIX: /usr/sww/bin/rdesktop MACOSX: "/Applications/Remote Desktop Connection/Remote Desktop Connection" You can also download it for free: Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx MacOSX: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop/default.mspx Linux: http://www.rdesktop.org/ These Instructional computers are Remote Desktop Servers: wserver1.eecs.berkeley.edu wserver2.eecs.berkeley.edu wserver3.eecs.berkeley.edu wserver4.eecs.berkeley.edu wserver7.eecs.berkeley.edu PLEASE LOGOUT BY SELECTING Start->Shutdown->log off rather than by clicking on the X at the upper right corner. Otherwise, you will only put your remote logon to sleep and therefore block others from access. This service is not as efficient as remote logins to UNIX computers. The Terminal Server will allow only a limited number of remote users at a time. For information about running a Remote Desktop server on your own computer (running Windows XP Professional), see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/default.mspx Bug in UNIX 'rdesktop' Full-Screen mode --------------------------------------- We have this 'rdesktop' bug on our Sunrays: if you start it in full-screen mode ('rdesktop -f'), the CTRL+ALT+ keystrokes fail to take it out of full-screen mode and you can't get back to the UNIX Window manager. The WEB site https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rdesktop/+bug/153995 gives second-best work-arounds: you either have to log out of the Windows session to kill rdesktop or logout of the SunRay UNIX session with CTRL-ALT-Backspace. We hope this is fixed in a future release of 'rdesktop'. Software that Works on Remote Desktop Servers --------------------------------------------- Many Windows software products cannot run on a server with multiple concurrent users. Here is a list of application programs that we have tested. These seem to work for multiple concurrent users: MATLAB ADOBE PREMIERE 6.5 LTSPICE AGILENT ADS SOLIDWORKS 2004, SOLIDWORKS 2005 EWS MULTISIM 9, MULTISIM 10 (but unsupported by vendor) Software that Does Not Work on Remote Desktop Servers ----------------------------------------------------- Many Windows applications don't run on Remote Desktop Servers either because of licensing or because they open files that can't be shared by multiple concurrent users. It's not always clear right away. Here is a list of programs that have failed to run on our RDC servers: ADOBE PHOTOSHOP HSPICE (ownership conflict on open files; Sep 2007) EXCEED (only runs on the session of the first user who starts an X session) XMING (only runs on the session of the first user who starts an X session) ALLEGRO CL CADENCE SOLIDWORKS 2006+ ANKHSVN NUNIT TESTDRIVEN.NET EECS Instructional Support 378/386 Cory, 333 Soda inst@eecs.berkeley.edu
