CS 39J: Session 2

Notes from January 28:

Previsualization:

Key in photography, the art of what a certain photograph will look like before it is taken. This way, one can often anticipate and fix problems before they are cemented into a photograph.

Record shot:

A photograph that records information in a pedestrian or unimaginative way. This is related to the concept of a "postcard shot" - while often beautiful, these pictures contain nothing unique.

Slide film:

The film used in making slides. Unlike negative film, the positive image is recorded on this film. Light then shines through it onto a projector for viewing. This type of film gives better colors, a higher resolution, and a larger dynamic range (the range of light intensity). Because it is the positive image, it is often counter-intuitively called "reversal film" - the reverse of the negative. Slide film is processed differently than negative film. In traditional photography with film, one exposes the shadows. Slide film, because it is the opposite image, requires one to expose the highlights.
