Electromagnetic Fields and Waves

Problem Set No. 5

Problem No. 1
Establish equation 14.13 (12) for the Gaussian beam mode in the paraxial approximation.

Problem No. 2
Establish equation 14.15 (8) for z02 as determined by R1, R2, and d.

Problem No. 3
A parallel pair of inifinite plane mirrors having reflectivity r1 and r2 are separated by a
distance d = lambda/2 + delta, where | delta | << lambda/2, and r1 = r2 = 0.99

(a) Assuming linear polarized waves, obtain the transmission as a function of delta.

(b) Find the value of delta for transmission of 50%.

(c) Show that the "resonant mode" can be viewed as a resonant RLC circuit.
      Find the value of Q.
