Introduction

In order to implement a system using digital techniques, such as programmable processors or digital logic, we first have convert all signals to discrete-time, using sampling if necessary. This is because any digital implementation must deal with sequences of signal values.

Sampling does not suffice, however, because digital implementations cannot deal with samples as real numbers. The samples must be quantized, to represent each sample by a finite set of values.
