EE 232 ¡V Lightwave Devices
Scope
The purpose of the term paper is to provide the students an opportunity to perform device designs from scratch, based on the fundamental material taught in the class, most of which theoretical.
Students will work in teams of two or three. Students will start the project by first examining the requirements of a chosen application, then proceed with a set of design, and finally calculate the device performance based on the theories taught in class and in technical publications. Students are expected to discuss some or all of the following aspects.
Presentation
Each project team will
present their findings in a 40-minute session, including a 10-minute
presentation by each team member and a 10-minute question and answer
session. A hardcopy and softcopy
of the viewgraphs are required before the class presentation. This portion represents 30% of the
course grade.
Term Paper
There is no page limitation. However, each paper must follow the standard technical
journal format, including abstract, introduction (or motivation), application
requirements, device design, modeling, calculated results, discussions, and
references. The reference section
should be formatted using IEEE technical journal format, including the full
list of authors and titles of the papers. This portion represents 30% of the course grade.
Evaluation
The evaluation will
be based on thoroughness, depth, clarity, design complexity, and originality
and breadth of the discussions.
Suggested Topics
Students can pick a
device and an application either from the list below or totally on their
own. The topic needs to be
approved by the instructor either verbally during office hours (highly
recommended) or by submitting an abstract.
