| Aug 19, 2009 6:16 PM | N/A, for me. It's probably situation-dependent. |
| Aug 20, 2009 5:15 AM | I feel like I work with my adviser by consensus -- it's not clear what it would even mean to have a disagreement where I "went over his head" to someone else. (But I could imagine talking to another faculty member to help work out some strategic disagreement.)
If I'm not happy with the department (or the ERSO bureaucracy, etc.) and my adviser is unable to help, then I definitely feel like there is no one to appeal to. (Maybe Dave Patterson, depending on the issue . . . .) |
| Aug 20, 2009 5:16 AM | It's not clear how to? |
| Aug 20, 2009 5:17 AM | This has only come up regarding issues of where best to focus research efforts, not regarding personal or career issues. |
| Aug 20, 2009 8:31 PM | I'm not always sure what to do about being on a research project that is somewhat far afield of my interests for my thesis research. |
| Aug 20, 2009 10:13 PM | but isn't that the nature of the game? |
| Aug 22, 2009 6:18 PM | Don't know really as I have just entered the PhD program |
| Aug 25, 2009 9:07 PM | Administration is great. Ruth and Pat are the best =) |
| Aug 25, 2009 9:48 PM | The overall level of bureaucracy and 'requirements' is quite high. It would be better to simplify things as much as possible. It is unfortunate, in particular, that the CS graduate student handbook is not comprehensive enough to be relied upon when making simple decisions. Also, we need to be notified of problems BEFORE they become serious and require intervention by administrators - as an example, I was unaware that the minimum number of credits I needed to take was different in my second semester than in my first, and I wasn't notified of the problem until the second semester was over. |
| Aug 25, 2009 11:01 PM | Ruth Gjerde was especially helpful with petitions. She generally knows who to ask for specific requests. |
| Aug 26, 2009 4:58 AM | But I don't think there is too much that I could do if there were an issue. |
| Aug 26, 2009 5:05 AM | I have never attended a class at Berkeley, so I really have very little to contribute on this survey. |
