Aug 20, 2009 5:18 AMIt's a little confusing as an incoming first-year student to understand the various funding levels and how they evolve (or don't) over time.
Aug 20, 2009 5:19 AMI'm in the Parlab, and I feel like it is a little unfair that we are so much better funded than some other areas. I would support more sharing/pooling of graduate student funding in the department.
Aug 20, 2009 5:35 AMConference funding is a little icky when the paper is the result of a summer internship - so my advisor was not directly involved, and the company did not sponsor me as I did not work there anymore. Department funding was not available and that was a problem.
Aug 20, 2009 5:38 PMIt's unclear to me what funding requests are reasonable; ie, is there a standard amount of funding (eg, one conference per year), or is it just up to each advisor's judgement?
Aug 20, 2009 10:14 PMI lucked out on this one, but I can see some gaps towards other labs ...
Aug 22, 2009 3:56 AMreally?
Aug 23, 2009 9:31 PMOther schools provide students with liberal travel grants and money, even to attend conferences that they don't have papers at
Aug 25, 2009 9:09 PMFunding is good, but I am concerned about new students who don't have funding - stop accepting so many!
Aug 25, 2009 9:34 PMThe base stipend amount should be increased. The cost of living is way too high in the bay area.
Aug 25, 2009 9:35 PMThere is a general worry about next year and feeling an urgency to apply for fellowships.
Aug 25, 2009 9:36 PMOnly one student on this paper was chosen to present. Not unfair, I think, but I'd have liked to go.
Aug 25, 2009 9:56 PMIt is no fault of the EECS department, but the people responsible for financial aid at Berkeley are grossly incompetent. They alerted me that I had received an overaward of $9000 more than 6 months after the fact, at which point it was very difficult to pay it back. I cannot imagine why they would claim to be ignorant of the EECS department grant for first-year students, since it appears in Bear Facts right next to all of the other financial aid information. I received grants and other types of financial aid routinely at my previous institution and never had any problem of this kind. The financial hardship was such that I seriously considered withdrawing from the program and applying to a different university, since they would allow me to pay the money back in installments if I left the program, but not if I was a continuing student. This is simply not the sort of thing I expected from an institution with the reputation of UC Berkeley.
Aug 25, 2009 11:03 PMOur stipends need to be higher. Especially for GSIs.
Aug 26, 2009 5:00 AMLooked pretty hard my first year, and there was nothing to be found. My advisor has been great!
