| Aug 19, 2009 6:29 PM | the IMAP server had an outage while i filled out this survey. how appropriate. |
| Aug 20, 2009 5:23 AM | It seems quite ridiculous that the department doesn't have any publicly available scanner, which is quite common in most institutions. |
| Aug 20, 2009 5:25 AM | Wireless in Soda is terrible. E-mail seems flaky, too, but I forward to Gmail.
Dealing with IT is also pretty bad -- I have, at times, faked my MAC address for weeks rather than have to deal with registering a new system, etc. |
| Aug 20, 2009 5:25 AM | I had a copy card when I first came but easily lost it and don't know how to replace it without paying for it. Argh. |
| Aug 20, 2009 5:26 AM | Again, there are huge disparities between different parts of the department in terms of access: this is frustrating and seems counterproductive. I am co-advised outside the department, and often just use resources from the other department because what is available is more clear. |
| Aug 20, 2009 6:17 AM | The IT department is incompetent, especially the EECS Helpdesk. Email goes down far too often, internet access is lost frequently, and the non-student staff at the EECS Helpdesk are rude and unhelpful. |
| Aug 20, 2009 6:24 AM | The resources, in terms of computer labs and access to printing, are surprisingly lacking. |
| Aug 20, 2009 4:01 PM | My copy needs are very small. I am able to use the little copier/scanner that was in the grad lounge, although I don't know where that is now that that has been taken over. |
| Aug 20, 2009 10:23 PM | wireless access is ridiculously unstable
I don't trust their backups at all
wired network access policy is ridiculous (such a pain to register, so easy to work around - only punishes honest ppl)
IT staff in general has no clue on anything |
| Aug 21, 2009 3:34 AM | SMTP over SSL/TLS is not working anymore with my mailclient (Mutt), too bad! |
| Aug 23, 2009 9:42 PM | more printers, and general use computers (similar to Athena quickstations at MIT say) around the department |
| Aug 25, 2009 6:06 AM | How do we print in CITRIS? |
| Aug 25, 2009 9:12 PM | I currently use one in CITRIS provided by the construction people. I want it to stay - it is great to not have to worry about how to print or make copies, it just works! |
| Aug 25, 2009 9:42 PM | The point of copy / printer access restrictions is just to make sure no one abuses it. If there was a simpler way to do that, I'd be all for it, but otherwise, I guess the current system is fine. |
| Aug 25, 2009 9:42 PM | we need more help desk support |
| Aug 25, 2009 9:50 PM | Why do we have like 3 IT departments in the department???? |
| Aug 25, 2009 10:09 PM | I wish that the signal strength for the wireless networks was more reliable throughout the building; there are still some parts of Soda where I have a hard time maintaining a connection. |
| Aug 25, 2009 10:49 PM | As for making copies, it seems like every grad student in the department should just have free access by default (with reasonable usage limits). On the rare occasions when I've had to make copies, I couldn't easily figure out how it could be done within the department (my advisor had no idea), so I ended up just making them elsewhere. It's too complicated / bureaucratic to try fund individual access to a copy machine. |
| Aug 25, 2009 11:16 PM | Right now IT support heavily depends on your group. Some groups (e.g. DOP, BWRC) have dedicated staff. For other smaller groups, grad students have to ensure that their servers and design kits are running. It would be nice to have departmental IT staff that addresses research needs in addition to the basic EECS infrastructure. |
| Aug 25, 2009 11:47 PM | Why can't we change our e-mail addresses? I changed the name I go by, and apparently I would have to pay several hundred dollars to change my e-mail address. That seems ludicrous. Why can't we at least be allowed one alias to be added? |
| Aug 26, 2009 12:06 AM | It would be nice if wireless signals worked everywhere, including mezzanine labs. |
| Aug 26, 2009 2:14 AM | I think that copying and printing would be a big hassle if my group didn't have this equipment. It seems that groups are basically required to maintain their own stuff.
The department should consider offering, on a department-wide basis, services that are not as commonly needed, such as a scanner and a poster printer. |
| Aug 27, 2009 6:11 AM | Soda already has several public printers... and at least used to hand out copy cards to new students |
