Microsoft Instruction Basically it says you need admin rights to program VB Active X components. This document is copied straight from microsoft unaltered so that I can always find it - searching through Microsoft's site is painful. If you want to view it here, turn off javascript to prevent errors from a nonexistent library link. Use F12,j to toggle javascript in the Opera browser.
You also need to be put in Debugger Users and VS Developers to debug with Visual Studio.net. Apparently this works if you are a local user, but fails if you are a domain user. What a strange and wonderful feature! Aaaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!!!!! Still not a true multiuser platform.

Laptop Instructions for The CS160 or CS169 Students

Laptops being prepared for new installation in our heavily used machine room.

I had 25 HP Omnibook 500 laptops with 1 year warrantees to support and I believe the overall quality of service to be comparable to that of IBM. HP's repair center was in Fremont and IBM's repair center was in Wilmington, Ohio, but the turnaround time was the same. Both IBM and HP performed the service quickly and both were easily reached. Neither had any delays when service needed to be performed. I had specified UCB EECS Intructional as the company information to keep it separate from everone else on campus who used only UC Berkeley - at least three other groups on campus used UCB for the company during the first year I was maintaining the IBM laptops - several people on campus changed the contact and shipping information after I set it up when I got the 570e's in September, 2000.

The only real difference between laptops was the quality of the laptops themselves. The Omnibook 500s were slightly inferior to the IBM 570e's that were used by the class or the T21 laptops we use for work. The keyboards were not as responsive on the Omnibooks. For some reason the students also broke the screens on the Omnibooks more frequently during the first semester of use, maybe because the screens were smaller and they were more likely to jam them into their backpacks. I have no experience with other HP models, so it may be that the Omnibooks were just geared towards general consumers and not as solidly made as the two IBM models.
