Connecting

Method 1: Simply connect to this server. When your browser prompts you, you will need to install the Remote Desktop ActiveX control. Once the page loads, type "kramnik.eecs.berkeley.edu" in the server box, select a screen resolution and hit "Connect."

Method 2
: This is the more reliable, more efficient method. However it requires you to have the Remote Desktop Connection client.

  • Windows XP: The RDC client should already be installed.
  • Other MS Operating Systems: You can download the RDC client from microsoft here.
Once you have the RDC client installed, simply run it. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection . In the server box type "kramnik.eecs.berkeley.edu" and then press connect.

Method 3 : All of the machines in 125 Cory have the RDC client installed and there is a desktop shortcut. It is relatively easy, but slightly pointless, to access Kramnik from the lab.   From these machines you can refer to it as simply "kramnik" rather than "kramnik.eecs.berkeley.edu"

Logging In
Your login for kramnik is the same as your login for the lab machines. As with the lab machines, you need to log into the EECS domain. If your login has been locked out, wait 15min and try again, someone (perhaps you) simply tried to enter too many invalid passwords for your account.

Restrictions

  • Please restrict your usage of kramnik to simulations and file transfers.
  • Your session will be terminated if you are idle or disconnected for more than 30min.
  • Remember kramnik is a shared resource, abusing it will result in loss of login privleges.

Storage
While logged into kramnik you can use the "Z:\" drive for local storage. You will also have access to your normal "U:\" drive, which you should use for permanent storage. Currently the contents of the "Z:\" drives are not deleted when you log off. This may change if people abuse the storage space.

Printing
When you are logged into kramnik you should be able to print from kramnik to any local printer. IE: your home printer if you're at home or print125-a, print125-b and print125-c if you're in the lab. If you are security minded, or if this is not enabled you can change your settings (if you're using login method 2 or 3). Before you log in to kramik simply click Options >> in the RDC client, navigate to the Local Resources tab, and check/uncheck the box labeled Printers near the bottom. When checked kramnik will be able to print to your local printer.

Transfering Files
In order to transfer files from home to your "U:\" you must enable an option and then log into kramnik. Before you log in to kramik simply click Options >> in the RDC client, navigate to the Local Resources tab, and check/uncheck the box labeled Disk Drives near the bottom. When checked kramnik will be able to access all of your local disk drives. While this is a small security risk (to you) it may be worth it. To access your drives while you are logged into kramnik, you will need to open My Computer on kramnik. Your drives will appear at the bottom of the window. Keep in mind that your local drives will not have drive letters.
