CS194-26 Project 2: Building a Pinhole Camera

Background

The goal of the project was to build a pinhole camera, a camera obscura. Essential, its a dark box (or dark room) with a small opening (pinhole) on one side and a blank sheet or white wall on the other side.

Implementation

We used a shoe box and a Sony A6000 Camera for our pinhole camera. First we taped black construction paper to all inside sides of the shoe box, expect for one side, where we taped a blank sheet of paper. Then, we taped the entire shoebox with black tape so the inside was inslutated from all other sources of light. Finally, we cut two holes into our shoe box- opposite of the blank sheets of paper. One hole was for the Sony A6000 camera lens itself and the other hole was used for our different sized pinhole covers (1mm, 3mm, and 5mm).

Pinhole Camera Results

For imaging, we used three different sized pinholes (1mm, 3mm, 5mm) and used a 30 second exposure time for each of the images.

We got the best results with the 5mm aperture pinhole.

This naive solution only works for smaller JPG images
