Final Project 1: Focus on Miniatures

Jonathan Chu

Background

In this project, we create fake miniatures by simulating the effect of selective focus cameras. To do this I take two points' y positions to create a horizontal depth of field. Then, I set a blur width of 100 pixels where each row of 100 pixels above and below the depth of field are blurred more and more. This lets me recreate the focus affect on a strip in the image. The blur we apply is a simple Gaussian blur.

Final Project 2: Vertigo Shots

Background

In this assignment, we recreate the in-camera effect: the dolly zoom. To perform this visual effect we need to make sure that we have a camera with a real zoom lens so that we can accurately control the amount of zoom that we apply to each image. The camera I used was the camera on an iPhone 7+. This camera has real zoom up to 2x. To create this dolly zoom effect, I used the grids on the camera when shooting to line up an object. I gradually moved further away from the object while zooming in to maintain its body in a specified grid. Thus, the subject seems to remain in the same spot while the field of view surrounding the subject changes.

The following are some of my results:
