The Dolly Zoom is an effect that creates the illusion of a stationary object in the midst of a moving (zooming background). It is implemented by adjusting the field of view, which just amounts to moving backwards while zooming forwards in a controlled manner.
The most challenging part was definitely controlling the position of the subject in the picture without a tripod. Even dollying backwards steadily with a chair was difficult because subtle shifts would lead to shakiness in the gif. My best result was definitely the first gif, which I captured using the Canon Mark III that Jacobs Hall lends out.
My subjects were makerspace artwork and a cute bear found within my two homes at Berkeley--Jacobs Hall and Sutardja Dai Hall!
Lasercut artwork I made last year inspired by Chinese papercutting!
A big bear in the Citris Foundry that kept me company this finals week.
My friend and coworker in the Invention Lab Dan made these decorations for A Charlie Brown Citris!
A failure case of the Dolly Zoom effect, but it's still artistic so your call.
Here are some examples of the frames that comprise the gifs above.
