Final Project - Vertigo Shot and Fake Miniatures

Vertigo Shot

In this project, I try to recreate the vertigo shot effect with a digital camera. The vertigo shot (also called the dolly effect) is where you change the DOF/zoom of a camera while also physically altering the distance from the subject. This was accomplished in my results by gradually zooming out as I moved closer to my subject. This causes a cool effect where the subject is kept the same, but the background drastically changes.

I used a Nikon D90 with 18mm-200mm lens.

Fake Miniatures

For the fake miniatures project, I took an image and chose a band of the image to remain in focus, and then gradually applied a gaussian blur that grew in intensity as I got farther from the in-focus band. This creates an effect of making the in focus object seem extremely small (hence the “fake miniature” object).
