Fake Miniatures

The goal of this project is to replicate the Tilt Shift effect by simulating the effect of selective focus cameras.

Procedure

After getting the photos that I wanted to use, I would first select the focus area using a custom object mask. I then applied a Gaussian blur to both the mask and image and used a linear alpha blend to blend the blurred part of the image with the unblurred focus area selected in the binary mask. Lastly, to improve the illusion of the miniature, I increased the saturation of the overall picture.

Dolly Zoom

The goal of this project is to replicate the dolly zoom effect.

Procedure

Using a DSLR camera with a zoom lense, I took a series of photos of the same subject. Everytime I moved back, I would zoom in on the subject in order to keep it the same size in the picture. At first I had trouble keeping the subject size/alignment constant until I started using the gridlines in the camera viewfinder. Because the gridlins were pretty wide, I ended up making my subjects pretty big to fit into the grid. After gathering a series of photos, I also compiled them together to make a dolly zoom gif.

Conclusion

I thought the fake miniatures project was cool. I was able to pull together techniques that I learned in class and previous projects to do this and the effect was interesting!
