Edward Oakes Why does Google prefer not to rely on the traditional firewall? 1) Google does not choose to rely on a traditional firewall for two primary reasons. The first is that they do not completely trust their internal network. There could be malicious software running on internal servers or client devices connected, and this would cause vulnerabilities with a traditional firewall model as security is lessened on the internal network. Additionally, not using a firewall/VPN means that Google employees can work from any external network without any difference in user experience. Both of these factors are magnified by the fact that the workforce is now very mobile - workers bring mobile devices to and from work (and therefore may bring malicious software) and need to be productive on-the-go.
