Group Projects

Assistive Technology
Spring 2002
Prof. Jen Mankoff

The group projects are a semester-long effort with four main parts. The first is a proposal , followed by a design stage , implementation, and evaluation. All stages should be documented on your group web page.

The first thing due is your project proposal . This is due on February 20th. At that point we should have covered enough material for you to feel comfortable choosing a topic.

Projects may fall into one of three categories, discussed in depth in lectures. If you wish to do something that falls outside of these categories (e.g. a recognizer or a beaconing system for wheelchair navigation), great!  Please talk to the professor about how to structure it.

The first category is a design project in which you will investigate a need, design a technological solution for it, implement and test that solution. This type of project requires deep thought into whether technology is an appropriate solution and the evaluation should test for potential negative as well as positive impact of the technology.

The second category is a method project. This project involves developing or investigating a model of people with disabilities or a method for doing a user study. In many cases, you will be asking how an existing method or model needs to be expanded for a specific disability. In some cases, you may be developing a new one.

The third category is a tool or technique for supporting programmers or application developers in building accessible technology or testing technology for accessibility. This category has a strong focus on reusability, something that will need to be demonstrated in your evaluation. An example is the Bobby tool for testing website accessibility.
