Interesting but longer. Autobiography of John Hockenberry, who worked as a foreign correspondant for NPR for many years, and became paraplegic as a teenager.

An autobiography of John Rush, who due to cerebral palsy could not easily communicate.
Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language (Grace, 1985) ISBN 0-674-27041-X (paperback)
Researched history of two towns in Martha's Vineyard wear deafness was common and everyone spoke sign language. Illustrates a truly integrated community in which the disabled faced no stigma or handicap.

Oliver Sacks' voyage into the subject of Sign, it's implicatons for language, and the deaf movement.
