Getting Started in Photoshop

 

 

I. Open a Photograph

 		A. File->Open


II. What are pixels?

 		A. A pixel is the smallest unit of a picture file. Each pixel always contains  information about the color used;
		    you can assemble these pixels into one giant  matrix to form a photograph, just like a mosaic of colored tiles.


III. How do you select pixels?

 		A. Magic Wand
 			1. This tool selects pixels in the same color/tone range. Click on a color/tone  section to select it. 
 			2. To add another color/tone range to your selection, hold Shift down while clicking  on another section. 
 		B. Lasso
 			1. Use it like a pencil to draw around an area you want to select. 
 			2. To add to the selection, hold down Shift while defining a section.
 		C. Inverting selected pixels
 			1. To select the opposite of the pixels you selected originally, go to Select->Inverse


IV. What to do to selected pixels:

 		A. Color Alterations
			 1. Image->Adjust->Hue/Saturation
				 a) Use the sliders to alter the color saturation and hue in the selected pixels
 			 2. Image->Adjust->Color Balance
	 			 a) Use the sliders to alter the color balance
 		B. Brightness/Contrast
 			 1. Image->Adjust->Brightness/Contrast
 				 a) Use the sliders to alter brightness and contrast.


V. Creating Layers: Layers can be useful for selectively working on a particular aspect of your photograph without affecting another aspect.

 		A. To create a layer, select the desired pixels, then go to Layer->New->Layer  via Copy


VI. How to make a Web Photo Gallery

 		A. File->Automate->Web Photo Gallery
