5 November 2004

ASSIGNMENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:
The current assignment is portraiture, but has been expanded to include anything having to do with people. Keep Linda Rugg’s lecture in mind when doing this assignment.
People assignment is due Wednesday the 10th.

For those of you using the Sigma cameras, let Shamim know which photographs you took with it so we can compile a group of them to send to Richard Lyon at Foveon.

Next Friday, we will be going to the Berkeley Art Museum to see some California photographers they will even pull out some rare stuff in the back they have to show us. The plan will be to meet at Crossroads at 12 noon and then head to the Museum around 1.

We will most likely have a guest lecture on the 19th of this month.

There is a photography contest going on and details will be sent out in the next few days.

CRITIQUE:
A critique was held during this session.

Pay attention to cropping. The Theory of Negative Space is that negative, dark, or blank spaces balance out the whole picture and are sometimes necessary for composition and overall effect.

It’s good to place subjects off-center to create a stronger compositional effect, unless your subject somewhat fills the entire frame (think of the bee).

If you have dominant features that your audience will want to know about (such as the welder making the sparks or the rest of the construction sign), make sure not to cut them out of your photograph.

Again, pay attention to framing. Eliminate elements that may detract from the highlight of your photo (think of the construction in the background of the puddle picture).

Be conscious of focus. Try not to have too many of your main objects out of focus unless you’re intentionally going for that effect.
