Image Processing for Early Vision

Edges are curves in the image where there is a significant change in brightness. Edges can arise as:

  1. Depth discontinuities
  2. Surface orientation discontinuities
  3. Reflectance discontinuities
  4. Illumintaion discontinuities or shadows

Since edges correspond to areas in the image where the image changes brightness sharply, one idea would be to differentiate the image and look for places where the magnitude of the derivative is large. The only drawback with this approach is that differentiation enhances noise. Thus, it needs to be combined with smoothing.
