Lightwave Devices

Objective:

  • Develop a physical understanding of optoelectronic devices, including light-emitting diodes, semiconductor lasers, photodetectors, modulators;
  • Acquire basic skills for analyzing and designing semiconductor optoelectronic devices and photonic integrated circuits

Prerequisite:

  • EECS 130: Simple p-n junction, semiconductor physics, concept of energy bands, quasi-Fermi levels.
  • PHYS 137A/B: (recommended) Basic concept of quantum mechanics, perturbation theory
  • EECS 117: (recommended) Concept of dielectric waveguide, electromagnetic waves.

Homework:
Homework is usually assigned every Thursday and due the following Thursday in class. Discussion and collaboration is permitted, but you must write your own derivations and do your own calculations.

Midterms:
Two midterms (80 minutes each) will be given in class.  These are intended to gauge the student's understanding of the basic concepts covered in the course. Some numerical calculations might be required (i.e. do bring your calculator).  All exams will be open book/notes
                                                     
Final Exam:
The final exam will be open book. 

Grading:

  • Homework: 10%
  • 2 Midterms: 20% + 20%
  • Final Exam: 30%
  • Project: 20%
