Approach
Our paper looks to address the question: What are the incentives
for and impediments to the adoption and success of real-time collaborative
technologies? We begin by presenting the current environment for
real-time collaborative technology. We then evaluate the key factors
that will impede or support the adoption of these technologies
in the coming years. Where we identify impediments, we propose
possible remedies to overcome the problem. Next, we present several
case studies of current and future applications of real-time collaborative
technology and evaluate these cases within the context of the
aforementioned factors. These case studies, which provide insight
into how some of the identified impediments can be overcome and
when/where these tools are likely to succeed, form the basis for
our predictions of what the future will hold for collaborative
technologies.
The factors mentioned above are derived from the five core issues
addressed in the class:
- Technology Trends and Limits
- Economic Factors
- Human and Societal Factors
- Legal and Regulatory Factors
- Industrial Organization and Business Strategy
Our goal is to understand the different role each of these issues
will likely play in the development of collaborative technologies.
From this understanding, we can draw conclusions about how the
different factors might contribute to the adoption of collaborative
technology in organizations. It is important to note that while
we did consider the implications of these factors on the development
of the collaborative technology industry itself, our focus was
on the role these factors play in the decision making process
of an organization considering the technology.
