           Report on EECS Instructional Computing Facilities

Improvements, Fall '93:

   - added 2nd subnet (138 net)
   - added cluster of 40 HP 715s on 105 Cory
   - added Parker server, 1 GB for home directory disk space
   - added Po server, 3 GB for home directory disk space
   - added a 1GB "tmp" directory for semesterly use
   - added memory to Ara cluster workstations and Cory file server
   - added SWW, EESWW software repositories (using new Cory Hall Auspex)
   - "named" accounts free and for all instructional users
   - added on-line account request procedure (much less paper)
   - all users can use all workstations; ported CS6OA to workstations
   - offered "Instructional User's Guide" 
   - added Mathematica, Framemaker, Silvaco (Suprem, Spice)
   - added 14.4KB modems
   - added support for serial line XWindows (Xremote) for home users


Problems, Fall '93:

   - user disks filling up; downtime to fix that
   - not enough workstations at times of high use (almost every evening)
   - system crashes (mostly Po, Danube)
   - performance delays (mostly from server and network bottlenecks)
   - buggy password file distribution schemes (YP, rcp)
   - mail delays/losses because of high load avg on mail server
   - confusion about using named accounts ("turnin", work groups)
   - difficulty for beginners (esp CS60A) using the HP-Vue user interface
   - interdependence of systems: using NFS, some servers are critical and, 
     if down, prevent many users from proceeding; 
   - all users affected by whatever is slowest (their home dir fileserver, 
     software fileserver, the network or etc)
   - added complexity of multi-vendor, environment; incorrect paths,
     version mis-matches and inconstencies of software and keyboards
