Current Initiatives
    1) 'named' accounts on Win2K

       Instructional 'named' accounts will be created on Win2K as well as 
       on UNIX starting in Jan 2004.  (This was postponed for the Fall 2003 
       semester.)  Students who will qualify for 'named' accounts include 
       all EECS ugrad and grad majors, as well as students in many EECS 
       classes.  These users are not issued accounts on Win2K until now.
       We can only give them a temporary 'class' account for each class that
       requires Windows software.
       Students who already have Win2K research accounts (mostly the EE and 
       CS grad students) can already use their Win2K accounts in the 
       Instructional labs.  Starting in January, they will also be given an 
       Instructional home directory in addition to their research directory.
       Some of the benefits to this include:

       * These Instructional users will no longer be dependent upon UNIX 
	 labs.  They can still login to UNIX from Win2K labs if needed.

       * These Instructional users may not need an additional Win2K 'class' 
	 account just to access Win2K software.  This will reduce the 
	 number of class accounts we have to create each semester.

       * For EECS majors, the Instructional accounts on Win2K will remain 
	 active as long as they are here.

    2) Intel grant: new PCs in Graphics lab, new servers for Linux apps
       We anticipate receiving a grant from Intel soon that will replace
       the PCs in 349 Soda (CS184, CS284, CS294) and provide 2 new servers
       for application software such as Cadence on Linux (EE141).

    3) NetApp fileserver 

       IDSG and NetApp will donate a NetApp file server to Instruction in 
       Fall 2003 (postponed from Summer 2003).  The NetApp has terabytes 
       of storage and is fully redundant.  It may allow us to:

	- retire our old Win2K home directory server ("Fileservice")
	- increase disk quotas for our long-term 'named' accounts
	- share a single home directory between UNIX and Win2K accounts

       The NetApp will be phased into service.  We will have to implement a 
       disk-to-disk backup scheme to provide timely daily archiving for the 
       increased disk capacity.  We will probably use one of our current home 
       directory servers for that.  We will also need to reduce the level of 
       maintenance service (it is currently $20K/year), then consider whether 
       we should still rely on this as our central file server.

    4) WEB-based email services

       The Instructional email server ("Imail") will soon have a WEB site
       for individuals to read and post email, set email forwarding and 
       set email filtering.  This will make it easier for users to manage
       their email and to decrease spam.

Recent Improvements
    1) free Microsoft sofware for EECS students at home

       Free Microsoft software downloads are now available to students in EECS 
       classes (started in June 2003).  Microsoft donated a file server and 
       software licenses so that EECS students can obtain copies of Windows,
       Visual Studio/.NET compilers and other applications.  This service 
       helps our students by allowing them to do assignments using Microsoft 
       software on their home computers.  It helps the department because it
       will reduce the demand for access to Win2K computers in our labs.  
       The procedure starts at

    2) InstCD v 3.0 
       The third version of the Instructional Software CD was released in 
       January.  It is free to all students in EECS classes.  

    3) Improved email services

       The Instructional email server was moved to a more powerful server
       ("Imail") in January 2003.   It now provides a secure SSL-based IMAP
       service as well as the traditional UNIX NFS-based mail service.  This 
       is a step in our conversion from NFS-based to IMAP and WEB-based mail 
       services.  Anti-spam filtering is now running.  Email is rejected if 
       it is from a non-existent or blacklisted address.

    4) AirBears in Instructional labs

       Instruction funded the installation of several AirBears access points.
       AirBears is the campus-wide wireless network.   Students with their
       own wireless laptops can access AirBears for free in the vicinity of
       the Instructional labs in Soda, Cory and Hearst Field Annex.

    5) Lab Fee for Excess Printing
       We have been approved by COE to charge students for printer use beyond 
       a free quota that is based upon the classes they are in.  This has
       become necessary to control costs.  Instruction has a 5% budget cut 
       this year, and other student labs on campus (IS&T, Res Halls) already 
       impose feees for printing.  Students will authorize us to bill them
       by logging into

Reduced 'drop-in' Access in our Labs
    117 Cory has changed from a drop-in to reserved lab.

    EE100 was displaced from 120 Hesse Hall in June 2003.  EE100 has moved
    into refurbished space in 140A/B/C Cory, and the classes (EE117, EE119) 
    that were displaced from 140A/B/C Cory have move dinto 117 Cory and 
    145A/B Cory.   117 Cory and 145A/B Cory are reserved labs.

    117 Cory had been a 24x7 drop-in lab with 10 Win2K systems.  Those PCs
    have been moved to 199 Cory, displacing 10 UNIX SunRays.  (The 10 SunRays 
    were moved to HFA C for use by CS3 and CS61A).  
    The net result is that Cory Hall has 10 fewer systems available for 24x7 
    drop-in use.  There are now just 2 drop-in rooms in Cory: 119 Cory (18 
    UNIX, 10 Win2K) and 111 Cory (6 MacOS, 8 Win2K).  These drop-in systems 
    are used by students in EE classes that do not get reserved labs.  There 
    are as many as 800 students in this category each semester.

Final Year for Nomadic laptop loan program
   Since August 2000, Instruction has maintained the 79-odd "Nomadic" laptops 
   that were obtained by Prof Landay and are used by CS160 or CS169.  Prof 
   Landay's research group was collecting a $50 fee from each student to cover 
   the cost of insurance.  The laptop warranties expired in 2003, and we have
   decided not to continue the insurance.  So the students are now required to 
   pay only a deposit.

   We will not be able to maintain or replace each laptop as they fail, and 
   there is no program for funding replacements.  So the "Nomadic" program of 
   laptops for CS160 and CS169 will end in May 2004.

Labs moving to Hearst Field Annex (HFA)
    Two Instructional UNIX labs (for CS3 and CS61A) and the SelfPaced Center 
    moved to Hearst Field Annex (HFA) building C for the start of the Fall 
    2003 semester.  HFA is between Barrows Hall and Bancroft Ave.  We have
    been displaced from Davis Hall to accommodate construction of the new 
    CITRIS building on Hearst Ave (see  
    CS3 and CS61A labs will remain in HFA for at least 2 years, then be 
    relocated again to new facilties in Evans Hall.

New Equipment installed in FY 2002-2003
  Because of Instructional budget overruns in FY 2001-2002, we deferred all 
  major equipment purchases in FY 02-03.  Fortunately, in FY 01-02 we made
  substantial improvements that will carry us for 2-3 more years in several
  labs.  This includes these purchases and donations:

  4 SUN 280R servers, 50 SunRays (for 199 Cory, 275 Soda, C30 and C50 HFA)
  16 new PCs (for 119 Cory, CS152)
  32 new PCs (for 277 Soda)
  11 DELL 1650 servers (for autograding, compiling, database and WEB apps)
  new disks (for mamba.cs, UNIX home dir server)
  new Exabyte 430M Tape Library (for mamba.cs UNIX home dir server) ($14300)
  new Overland AIT-3 Tape Library (for NetApp home dir server) ($11,900)

Notable Events
  Jan 09 - Server downtime Mon Jan 12

	The Instructional UNIX home directory server (
	will down most of the day on Monday Jan 12 for an operating system
	upgrade.  We hope to limit the downtime to 11am-3pm.

	While mamba.eecs is down, nobody can login to the Instructional UNIX
	systems or connect to the UNIX home directories from Windows systems.
	During this time, class and student WEB pages will not be available

  Dec 02 - Non-SSL IMAP Support on imail.eecs has ended

	Non-SSL IMAP on imail was disabled on Dec 2, 2003.

	Now, imail.eecs only accepts IMAP connections that are using the SSL
	security protocol.  This affects people who have setup Netscape,
	Mozilla, or any mail program using IMAP, but did not check the SSL 

	for information.

Sep 17 - UNIX accounts had login problems between noon and 12:40pm

	A filesystem on Mamba filled up and caused problems for UNIX accounts 
	that depend on it.  To correct it, we had to unmount the filesystem
	and run file checks on it to clear a large log file from an 
	instructor's account.

	Typical symptoms were "file not found", "Stale NFS file handle" errors 
	and possibly hung-up login sessions due to commands that could not be 

	The problem was resolved at 12:40pm.

Sep 12 - off-campus network access reduced because of attacks

	The UC Berkeley campus network security (SNS) group has announced that
	as of 12:00 noon, Friday, September 12, several network ports used by 
	Windows are being blocked at the campus border.  The ports that are
	blocked are TCP/135, TCP/139, TCP/445, TCP/593, UDP/135, UDP/137, 
	UDP/138, and UDP/445.  The impact of these blocks is that several 
	Microsoft services including file sharing, access to Exchange mail 
	servers, and remote desktop access will not function across the border 
	of the campus network.  This is necessary to stop the spread of several 
	fast-moving and destructive viruses.

	At home, you may see error messages in Windows such as

	  "Access denied"
	  "The network path was not found"
	  "Unable to connect because the RPC server is unavailable"

	when you try to access computers on campus.  
	This does not prevent access to any campus WEB sites.

	Logins into UNIX systems are uneffected.  So to transfer files between 
	your Windows computer at home to your Instructional Windows directory
	on Fileservice, you can use your UNIX account as a transfer point:
	1) Login to UNIX (such as with SSH Secure Shell
	2) Use the SSH Secure File Transfer program to copy files between your 
	   Windows PC at home and your UNIX account
	3) Use the UNIX "smbclient" command to copy the files between your 
	   UNIX directory to your Windows directory.

	If you use a PC running Windows, it is critical that you apply patches
	regularly to protect yourself.  Microsoft will automatically check your

Sep 12 - 'NFS server mamba not responding' problem (5:10pm-6:30pm)

	From 5:10pm-6:30pm, activity on the Instructional UNIX computers 
	stalled and the error NFS server mamba not responding 
	was displayed.  Mamba.cs is the Instructional UNIX home directory 

	Please see 
	"Symptoms when UNIX email or home directories are missing"
	for some more information.

	We rebooted the server to clear the problem.   
	This was similar to the events on Sep 2 and 11.

	The Sep 11 and 12 events appear to have been caused by a 105-GB log 
	file that we had stored temporarily on /home/aa.  The filesystem was 
	unable to fully delete the file until we turned off journaling and ran
	a file check on the filesystem (200-GB).  The Solaris X86 journaling 
	software seems to choke on such huge files, but fortunately they are 
	very rare on our systems.

Fall 2003 - Forgot your password on the Instructional computers?

	<u>For named accounts:</u>

	Login as 'newacct' (password 'newacct') again (in 199 Cory, 273 Soda or 
	'ssh' to  Enter your Student ID number.  Then 
	select the new "p" option for resetting your password and reprinting a 
	form.  The form will be printed the next weekday and will be available 
	in 391 Cory after 1pm.

	Named accounts look like 'gbush' or 'bclinton'.

	<u>For class accounts:</u>

	Go to the sys admin staff for the lab you are assigned to use.
	Bring your initial class account form or student ID card.
	There is no on-line procedure for resetting the password of a class 

	Class accounts look like 'cs61a-aa' or 'ee141-agore'.

Fall 2003 - EECS Instructional CD v3.0 and SUN Java CDs

	Conditions of use:
	* student is
	  - an EE or CS major
	  - OR is enrolled in an EE or CS class
	  - OR is authorized for cardkey access to an EECS Instructional lab
	* student can use software for EECS coursework, not for commercial gain
	* only one of each CD per student please.  NOT FOR RESALE.

	Instructional CD:
	The "EECS Instructional Software CD" version 3.0 is now available from
	387 Soda and the CS SelfPaced Center.  This CD contains a collection 
	of public domain software used in EE and CS couses.  It is provided 
	free by EECS Instruction for students to use on their home computers.  
	(It replaces the floppy diskettes that were available at 387 Soda.)

	New features:

	Students in EECS classes can also download the Instructional CD software
	from a WEB site, prepared by EECS Instruction (thanks, brg!). There is 
	an image of the entire site that you can download and burn onto a CD,

Jan 2003 - mail server changed from "pasteur" to "imail" in January 2003

	On Mon Jan 13 at 3pm, we moved the Instructional mail and IMAP server 
	from to

	Both mail servers were down for about 30 minutes during the move.
	The new server has more disk space and more processing power, so it
	will handle IMAP better.  This will allow us to add new features,
	including spam and virus filtering, a better SSL/IMAP service, a 
	WEB-based email client and WEB-based email filtering configuration.  
	We will roll out those services as time permits during this semester.

	If you were using "pasteur.eecs" as your outgoing ("relay") email
	server, you should change that to

	If you were using "pasteur.eecs" as your IMAP server, you should 
	change that to

	Users who connect to the IMAP server on pasteur should now see the

  	    ATTENTION!!! Mail service has changed. Please read the 
	    following web site.

	(Apparently Outlook does not display that message.)

	Your password to the IMAP server on imail.eecs is the same as it was
	on pasteur.eecs, which is the same as the password you use to login
	to an Instructional UNIX computer such as cory.eecs.

	Your IMAP settings should include "Use secure connection (SSL)".
	The "IMAP server directory" option should be left blank.

	Email sent to Instructional email addresses such as @cory.eecs and 
	@pasteur.eecs are now delivered to the imail.eecs server.  (A .forward 
	file in your UNIX home directory may cause it to be redirected from 
	there.)  You can read the email using 'pine' and 'mailx' when you 
	login to an Instructional UNIX computer and using 'pine' or Netscape 
	Messenger when you connect to IMAP on .

	POP email service on Pasteur was ended in August 2002.

	Anti-spam filtering is now running on  Email

Aug 2002 - This is a new WEB server!

	<u>The <u>inst.eecs</u> WEB server was changed on Aug 29, 2002.</u> is the primary Instructional WEB server.

	<u>Symptoms to our Users</u>:

	The new server is running Apache v 2 (instead v 1), and we are still 
	finding some differences.  "include" directives only work now if the
	*.html file is executable ("chmod 755 *.html") or if the file ends 
	in the "shtml" instead of "html".   If you want to update your entire
	WEB site for this change, you can run "/share/b/bin/fix-html" on any 
	<a href="clients">EECS Instructional UNIX computer</a>.

	http://inst.eecs is a DELL 2300 PE with 2 Pentium II cpus running
	Solaris X86.   It does not allow direct logins.

	http://inst.eecs is running a different version of UNIX than it was 
	before August 2002.  If you have compiled CGI server-side programs,
	they have to be compiled to run on Solaris X86.  You can login to
	these Solaris X86 servers to do that:  

		po.eecs, torus.cs, rhombus.cs, pentagon.cs

	There is a PHP module now.  See
	for information and examples.

	Apache 2 omits the $ENV{'REMOTE_HOST'} variable, although Apache 1 had 
	it.   If we can figure out how to add it back, we will.

May 2002 - your LOST+FOUND directory

	Mamba.cs, the Instructional UNIX home directory server, crashed on
	April 29 and was down for 33 hours.   For an explanation of the 
	circumstances, please see the Spring 2002 Managers' Report.

	A number of files and home directories were not restored to their
	proper names and locations.   When we couldn't determine where the 
	files should go, we put them a directory called LOST+FOUND in your 
	UNIX home directory.   Please see your LOST+FOUND/README file for an 
	explanation of how you can read these files, and ask us for help
	( if needed.

<u>Symptoms when UNIX email or home directories are missing</u>:

	- "home directory is /" error message when logging in
	- session hangs up if you try to 'ssh' into an Instructional computer
	- unable to read WEB pages from the 
	- lots of annoying "NFS timeout" error messages on your screen
	- new email deliveries will be delayed on imail.eecs 

	We disable email receipt and relaying through imail.eecs when the
	home directory server ( is down.  No mail is 
	lost.  Computers that send mail queue messages that are not accepted
	by a remote server, and they resend the messages periodically until 
	they are received.
