GRADING:
The
class has 7 graded homework assignments, a midterm, a final exam, and an
optional project. The combined homework grades will make up 33% of
your grade, the midterm will count 33%, and the final will count for the
remaining 33% of your grade. In addition,
you may complete an optional project to raise your grade. The project would
allow you to raise your grade 10%.In
other words, I will assign final class grades as if the maximum points
for the class is 100, but with the project the maximum points is actually
110. Note that anyone wishing to submit a project must first submit a proposal.
More information on the project and proposal is available from the project
information page. The assignments and exams are different than those used
by Professor Patterson, so do not be alarmed if you find Prof. Patterson
talking about a section of an assignment which does not seem to correspond
to your assignments.
Please
contact me if you are experiencing difficulty with any aspects of the course.I
want to help you to be successful, but I can only help when I know there
is a problem. HOMEWORK
DISTRIBUTION AND SUBMISSION: Homeworks
will be distributed on-line. I can also fax or mail homeworks to you if
necessary. The due dates are listed in the syllabus for each homework. Homeworks
should be submitted in electronic form by email, by fax, or in hardcopy
by mail. Electronic form by email is preferred. NOTE: If I cannot
read the fax, you may lose points. If your submission contains text which
is small or prone to distortion due to fax quality problems, I suggest
that you email or mail your homework instead. For
email submission, please use one of the following electronic formats.
Pdf, microsoft doc, postscript, or plain ascii text. Also,
the CalVIEW office asks that you put your name, the course number (CA 714
CA, in our case) and the homework number on anything you turn into that
office via fax or mail. They receive a lot of correspondence from students
and it can be difficult for them to decipher homeworks when there is no
name, homework number or class name. If
you use mail, your homeworks should be postmarked by the due dates indicated
in the syllabus. I have included a sheet of return labels in this packet
for the return of your homeworks. If you need additional labels just let
the CalView office know, and they will send you more. Also,
please make a copy of everything you send me, in case work disappears en
route. EXAM
ADMINISTRATION: The
midterm and the final exams will be posted online. You will have
5 days to complete them individually, from Monday to Friday. They
should be submitted by the same procedure as homework. LATE
WORK: All
homeworks are due on the dates specified on the syllabus. I understand
that special circumstances occasionally arise making it difficult to turn
in an assignment on time.I am very
aware that most NTU engineers/students are trying to balance this class
with often unpredictable work demands and I would like to be as flexible
and accommodating as possible.However,
I have found that ?free? extensions are unfair to other students because
they delay the posting of solutions and make those students who push to
meet the deadline feel cheated.In
addition, I have found that students who are chronically late with their
homeworks cheat themselves out of the best possible understanding of the
material. With
all of these factors in mind, I have established the following policy which
I hope strikes a balance between flexibility and fairness to other students: ·1-2
days late - 5% penalty ·3-7
days late - 10% penalty ·In
rare cases, I may grant one additional late extension with an additional
10% off. In
all cases, you must request an extension *BEFORE* the due date.If
you do not request an extension before the due date, no extension will
be granted. This allows me to delay
the posting of solutions until all homeworks have been sent.If
your homework is faxed or postmarked AFTER I post the solutions, no credit
will be given for your assignment - no exceptions. If
you talk to me, I will try to delay posting the solutions. If
you are mailing your homework near the deadline, please be careful to watch
the postmark it receives. These
penalties are not designed to punish anyone,They
are designed to foster the best learning environment for everyone involved
and should not effect your final grade if your requests for extension are
infrequent. Please
note that an extension on one homework does not imply extensions on subsequent
homeworks. If you ask for an extension,
you will need to work doubly hard to finish the current homework and the
next one in order to avoid another late penalty. Important
Warning: In
addition, I feel that is essential that all homework solutions beposted
early enough to allow everyone to use them when studying for an exam. Therefore,
I may be unable to grant lengthy extensions on the last homework before
each exam. INCOMPLETES: The
following policy for NTU Incompletes was drafted after consultation with
the office of the Dean of the Graduate Division at UCB: I
will take the approach the University does for on-campus students and evaluate
each case individually.Then, with
the recommendation of the consultant, I will decide if that particular
case warrants an extension.The exact
limit put on the time allowed for a student to finish an incomplete will
depend on the individual's case and the restrictions inherent to a long-distance
educational program.(For example,
some courses will not be taught after certain semesters, and I only have
our consultants available to grade work during the semesters the course
is offered.) In
most cases, incompletes must be finished before the next semester begins.
