Exam Logistics

The midterm is on Thursday, July 11, 2024, 2-4 PM PT.

If you need DSP accommodations or some other alteration to your exam, please fill out this form by Tuesday, July 9th, 11:59 PM PT. We will respond to all form submissions after the form closes before Wednesday, July 10th.

We sent out room assignments on Thursday, July 4th. Email cs188@berkeley.edu if you need to change anything, or if you didn’t receive a room assignment.

The following lectures are in scope for the midterm: Lectures 1-9 and the first half of lecture 10 (up to, but not including the forward algorithm). While HMMs are in scope, we will only be examining on HMM basics taught in lecture 10 given that the large HMM lectures (lecture 11 and 12) are not in scope. The content of all assignments and discussions with end dates prior to the midterm are included in the scope and are good review material for the midterm. The midterm will have more short-answer questions than in past semesters, so you can expect it to look similar to last summer’s midterm. However, you can be assured that the difficulty will not waver much from past midterms.

The exam will be closed-book, closed-notes, and closed-internet. No calculators are allowed except in case of DSP accommodation (no questions should require a calculator). However, you may use two cheat sheets (two-sided) of your own design (handwritten or typed).

Academic Integrity

  • Any form of communication or collaboration is cheating. Providing answers, receiving answers, and even just talking with others about course material during the exam windows are all violations of the Berkeley honor code.
  • Every case of potential academic dishonesty will be manually reviewed, and you’ll be able to discuss the situation with an instructor.
  • We may ask some students to take a short verbal exam after the exam and explain how to solve one or more problems that are similar to an exam question they got right.
  • Please be mindful to not discuss the exam until solutions are released. Keep in mind that we still have alternates and DSP exams after the normal exam ends.
  • All multi-person forms of communication related to 188 should temporarily close communication a few hours prior to the midterm and extending at least 24 hours after the midterm (or until the Edstem is opened, whichever comes first). This may include discord channels, multi-person study groups, etc. This is to assure that anyone in these study groups who may be taking the midterm at an alternate time does not see discussion about the midterm prior to its end.
